The day began in Barstow, California — a familiar desert town with a full tank of gas and a camera bag riding shotgun. My destination was Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, a place I’d seen in photos and postcards but never with my own eyes. My goal: to stand at that iconic overlook and capture sunset at the edge of the world.
The road from Barstow to Death Valley winds through time-worn terrain — forgotten stretches of Route 66, sun-blasted rock formations, and the hushed vastness that defines the Mojave. I stopped once at Badwater Basin, seduced by the pull of those otherworldly salt flats, and nearly lost track of time. But I couldn’t miss my main objective. As the sun began its descent, I raced the fading light up Highway 190, arriving at the Zabriskie Point parking lot with barely minutes to spare.
Named after Christian Zabriskie, vice president of the Pacific Coast Borax Company, Zabriskie Point is a surreal landscape of eroded badlands and colorful sediment. It once lay beneath an ancient lakebed, long since dried up, and the twisting ridges and valleys you see now are carved from the clay, volcanic ash, and minerals that settled here over millions of years. Death Valley itself became a national monument in 1933 and a full-fledged national park in 1994 — the largest in the contiguous U.S. and home to both the lowest and hottest points in North America.
As I climbed the short trail to the overlook, the sky exploded with color — streaks of coral and lavender stretching across a sapphire dome. The sun hovered just below the ridgeline, casting the last golden rays over the rust-colored hills and painting the undulating terrain in soft, ethereal light.
I found a spot, set up my tripod, and framed the shot just in time. Click.
The moment was still. Quiet. Except for the hushed murmurs of others around me, equally awestruck, and the faint whisper of wind sweeping across the canyon. The air was dry and cool, carrying the faint scent of sun-baked earth and dust.
As I pressed the shutter again and again, I felt it — that quiet triumph, the reward at the end of a long desert journey. I had made it just in time, and the desert had offered me its best face.
Zabriskie Point wasn’t just a destination that day. It was the reward — the treasure at the end of the road, captured in a single frame.
