Wild Horse Photography - Goodsprings, Nevada
I was headed to the top of Mount Potosi, looking for a unique vantage point to capture the lights of Las Vegas shimmering from above. As I drove toward the dusty road that twists its way up the rugged mountain, I was lost in thought, mentally mapping out the perfect shot for later that evening. Just as I reached the base of the mountain, though, something caught my eye—a flash of white against the sun-baked earth. I slowed to a crawl, hardly believing what I was seeing.
A small herd of wild horses was grazing peacefully near the road, seemingly unaware of the world around them. Among them was a striking pair—a pale mare and her spindly-legged foal, both bathed in morning light. Their coats shimmered in shades of cream and butterscotch, blending almost seamlessly into the arid landscape. The mother stood protectively over her foal, her mane catching the breeze as the youngster curiously eyed me from a safe distance.
Wild horses have roamed the rugged deserts and mountains of Nevada for centuries, descendants of Spanish horses brought to the region in the 16th and 17th centuries. They’ve survived harsh climates, scarce water, and human encroachment, becoming a symbol of the untamed spirit of the West. In the Goodsprings area, small bands of these resilient animals still traverse the rocky terrain, living free as they have for generations.
I parked as quietly as possible, stepping out slowly to avoid spooking them. The air was dry and carried a faint scent of sagebrush, warmed by the sun. The ground crunched underfoot as I set up my camera, careful not to make any sudden movements. The sound of the wind rustling through sparse desert grass was interrupted only by the occasional snort from one of the horses or the scrape of hooves on rocky soil. The mare kept a watchful eye on me but didn’t move away, trusting me just enough to let me share the moment.
It wasn’t easy capturing the foal’s curious expression without alarming them, but patience paid off. I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears as I adjusted my settings, ensuring I captured the texture of their coats and the way the light kissed the foal’s delicate face. The little one moved closer to its mother, brushing against her side, and the mare nuzzled her foal reassuringly. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of reverence—like I had been given a brief glimpse into a world most people never see.
The herd eventually moved on, trotting off into the distance with dust kicking up around their hooves, their manes streaming behind them like banners in the wind. I stood there for a moment longer, letting the adrenaline settle, before finally getting back in my vehicle.
The plan had been to photograph Las Vegas from Mount Potosi, but these wild horses had stolen the show. As I drove away, I couldn’t help but smile, grateful that sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them. The spirit of the West lives on in places like this, where wild horses roam and the land remains untamed.
