The journey had brought me to the dusty edge of Oatman, Arizona—one of Route 66’s quirkiest relics—where the famous wild burros still roam the streets as if they own the place. I had pulled over to photograph one of these shaggy legends when something else caught my eye. Just beyond the gravel lot, nestled against a scrubby hillside, sat a vintage camper van that looked like it had been parked there since the golden age of road trips.
The van was a beautiful relic of a different time—a time when freedom meant loading up a camper with nothing but a sleeping bag, a guitar, and a map you never really planned to follow. These vans were icons of the 1960s and 70s, beloved for their simple mechanics, their boxy silhouettes, and their uncanny ability to turn every mile into an adventure. They were the heart and soul of the American counterculture—painted with flowers, packed with dreams, and driven toward sunsets.
Though I had set out to capture Oatman’s wild spirit through its burros, the story changed in an instant. This van, parked stoically against the backdrop of the desert, told a story of its own—a story of movement and stillness, of someone who had once chased horizons and decided, for today at least, to rest.
The desert air smelled faintly of creosote and dust, a dry perfume stirred up by the endless breeze. Overhead, clouds smeared across the sky like brushstrokes in a painting, and the low sun cast long shadows across the gravel and sage. It was quiet out here, save for the occasional bray of a burro or the distant rumble of a motorcycle echoing off the hills.
