The Texas Panhandle’s wide-open skies and endless horizons had always been a playground for my camera. That day, I was running up and down I-40, chasing light and history along old Route 66. Every stop seemed to hold some treasure—abandoned buildings, neon signs, and the stories of a road that once carried America’s dreams westward.



Flying down the interstate, my eye caught the glint of a weathered neon sign across the road, standing guard over a long-closed gas station. I almost pulled over, my mind already composing the shot, but then, something massive caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. A barn. No, not just a barn—a Texas barn, its doors adorned with the unmistakable Lone Star Flag, painted boldly across the massive surface. It was as if the state itself had staked its claim on this structure, daring anyone to ignore its pride.



I hit the brakes, heart racing, and found the nearest exit to double back. The wind was brisk, sweeping across the flat plains with an edge that reminded me it was December in the Panhandle. The barn sat alone in a dusty field, framed by the endless blue sky, its stark simplicity magnified by the bold colors of the Texas flag. I could feel the pull—this was a moment I couldn’t miss.



Parking just off the side of the road, I grabbed my camera and began to compose the shot. The light was perfect, with the sun low enough to bring out the texture in the barn’s corrugated metal walls while saturating the blue sky and the vibrant red, white, and blue of the flag. The quiet was profound, broken only by the distant hum of semis on the interstate and the occasional chirp of a meadowlark. I moved around the scene, searching for the best angle to capture the enormity of the barn against the vast Texas sky. The Lone Star seemed to glow, a beacon of pride and resilience standing strong in the middle of nowhere. I stood there for a moment longer, taking in the scene, before heading back to my truck.



I didn’t make it to the neon sign that day, but it didn’t matter. This barn, this moment, had stolen the show. It was a perfect snapshot of the Panhandle’s charm—unassuming, proud, and unforgettable.
