Texas Wall Art
The open road has always felt like home to me. There's something about the desolation of the desert highways, the endless skies, and the whispers of forgotten places that pulls me in. I can't explain why, but abandoned gas stations out in the middle of nowhere have always fascinated me. They stand as relics of another time—silent witnesses to decades of road trips, adventures, and stories long since forgotten.
Driving through far West Texas, the sun hung low in the sky, bathing the desert in golden light. When I spotted the rundown gas station, I knew I had to stop. Its weathered pumps and peeling signs told a tale of better days, but it was what lay behind the station that really caught my eye—a battered, graffiti-covered trailer standing alone against the rugged landscape. It was as if the trailer was waiting for someone to notice it, to preserve its fleeting moment of defiant beauty.
I parked my Jeep and grabbed my camera. The desert was eerily quiet, save for the soft rustling of the breeze through the scrub brush. Normally, I'd feel completely at ease in a place like this—just me, my camera, and the silence—but not this time. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled as if I were being watched. I glanced around, but there was no one in sight, just the vast expanse of desert stretching to the horizon.
The trailer itself was a kaleidoscope of colors. Bright, chaotic graffiti splashed across its sides, a stark contrast to the muted tones of the desert around it. The light was perfect—the golden hour was in full effect, and the trailer seemed to glow against the deepening blue of the evening sky. I framed the shot carefully, trying to capture the juxtaposition of the wild, artistic chaos of the trailer with the serene, empty landscape.
As I worked, that nagging feeling of being watched wouldn’t go away. Shadows stretched long across the ground, and every now and then, I’d hear the faintest rustle, like someone—or something—moving just out of sight. I told myself it was just the wind, or maybe a curious desert critter, but the sensation stayed with me.
I took one last shot, the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a warm, amber glow over everything. As I packed up my gear, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the trailer itself had a story, one it wasn’t quite ready to share. Maybe it was the graffiti, vibrant and defiant against the decay, or maybe it was the stillness of the place, but something about it felt alive, as though the trailer had absorbed the memories of those who had once called it home.
Driving away, I glanced back in the rearview mirror, unable to shake the uneasy feeling, but as the miles rolled by, it gave way to something else—a sense of wonder at the stories hidden in the most unexpected places, just waiting for someone to stop, notice, and capture them.
