Starlite Motel - Mid Century Modern Art Photography



The journey doesn’t always end at the top of a canyon or in the glow of a desert sunrise—sometimes, it ends on a strip of pavement, staring up at a trio of neon women frozen mid-dive.



I had just wrapped up an epic road trip with friends—Sedona’s red rock cathedrals, the Grand Canyon’s vastness, Monument Valley’s towering formations. Our cameras were full, our hearts fuller. With a few hours to kill before my flight out of Phoenix Sky Harbor, I decided to chase one last shot.



The Starlite Motel was built in 1958, when Mesa was rapidly growing and roadside culture was booming. Back then, neon signs were as much about catching your eye as they were about creating an identity.



While the motel itself has seen better days—and reportedly hosts long-term residents more than vacationers now—the sign remains a beloved local landmark. It's been photographed by retro enthusiasts, preservationists, and neon fans alike. A slice of kitsch Americana that somehow hasn’t been bulldozed in the name of progress.



The sun was still high, casting a golden gleam across the patina of the sign’s fading paint. The bold reds, cool aquas, and white trim glowed in the afternoon light. The Arizona heat radiated from the pavement, cars buzzed by, and the wind blew ever so slightly.

Just one frame—but it felt like capturing history. A farewell to the Arizona desert, a wink from a bygone era, a final photo before the plane home.
