The long road from Mexican Hat to Las Vegas on US-89 is a journey through the heart of the Southwest’s untamed beauty. The stark desert landscape stretched endlessly before me, every twist and turn of the road revealing a new masterpiece sculpted by nature. The silence of the drive, punctuated only by the hum of my tires, was meditative, but as the afternoon light began to shift, something ahead demanded my attention.
There it was—a colossal rock formation standing tall against the horizon near Big Water, Utah. It had a presence that couldn’t be ignored, its weathered facade marked by time and the elements. But it wasn’t just the rock itself that caught my eye—it was the light. The sun hung low in the sky, casting dramatic shadows that etched deep lines into the rock’s surface, while the illuminated edges gave it a sense of ethereal weightlessness. It was as if the formation had stepped out of time and into this moment just for me.
I pulled my car off to the shoulder, the crunch of gravel beneath my tires breaking the stillness.
