San Antonio Art
San Antonio had drawn me in once again, this time to capture The Alamo under the night sky. But as I wandered the city with my camera in hand, my attention was drawn to another iconic landmark towering over the skyline—The Tower of the Americas.
Built for the 1968 HemisFair World’s Fair, this 750-foot-tall structure was once the tallest observation tower in the United States. Originally constructed to symbolize San Antonio’s progress and cultural significance, it still dominates the city’s skyline, its rotating restaurant and observation deck offering stunning panoramic views. But beyond being an architectural marvel, the tower also serves a modern purpose—its antenna is home to three powerhouse FM radio stations: KQXT 101.9, KJXK 102.7, and KZEP 104.5, each sending out their signals from high above the city.
Wanting to capture the tower in a way that showcased its grandeur, I moved in closer. Downtown San Antonio, especially the Riverwalk, is a magnet for tourists, and as I set up my tripod and long telephoto lens, I felt the curious eyes of passersby. A few people slowed down to glance at my setup, some even stopping to ask what I was photographing.
I took my time adjusting the composition, waiting for just the right moment. The lights of the tower glowed against the black sky, the colorful reflections in the windows giving a sense of life to the structure. The bright red warning beacon at the top flickered like a heartbeat, pulsing as if the tower itself was alive.
As I pressed the shutter, I knew I had captured something special—a symbol of San Antonio’s past, present, and future, standing tall against the Texas night.
