Capturing the Tin Man: Bandera’s Iconic Water Tower
Bandera, Texas, proudly wears the title "Cowboy Capital of the World." Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, this small town has long been a gateway to the rugged cowboy lifestyle, with its history steeped in cattle drives, rodeos, and honky-tonk music. But above all the action, standing tall against the sky, is a symbol that has watched over Bandera for generations—the Tin Man Water Tower.
This classic water tower has been an enduring part of Bandera’s skyline since 1940, a beacon for locals and travelers alike. Unlike modern water towers with their sleek, uniform designs, this one holds onto its vintage charm, with riveted steel and towering support beams that seem to belong to another era.
I wanted to capture a striking portrait of the Tin Man, named for its resemblance to the character in The Wizard of Oz
At first, I thought my drone would be the key. I launched it into the Texas sky, circling the tower for the perfect angle. But every shot felt... off. The power lines, the background clutter—it all took away from the water tower’s commanding presence.
So I went back to basics.
I hopped in my truck and drove around town, scouting for the right vantage point. I passed the historic main street, where cowboys still ride horseback, and looped through a few backroads before I finally found the spot.
I stepped out, raised my camera, and framed the Tin Man against the sky, isolating it from distractions. I knew this one had to be in black and white—a timeless image of a landmark that had stood strong through the years.
And just like that, I had my shot.
Bandera’s water tower, standing proud, a symbol of a town where the Old West is still alive and well.
