The western Texas Panhandle is a region that seems to hold its breath, where silence stretches as wide as the land itself. I had spent the day exploring forgotten Route 66 towns, capturing fading signs and buildings that whispered of a bygone era. The sun was starting to set in the clear blue sky, casting its golden light across the landscape. I’m not sure why, but I decided to venture off the beaten path. A dirt road beckoned, and with my camera gear ready, I followed it.
An abandoned farm building appeared on the horizon. Its weathered wood and three distinct cupolas stood stark against the boundless sky. The building, likely a long-forgotten chicken house, had clearly been empty for decades, its structure weathered by relentless winds and unyielding sun. I pulled off to the side of the road, dust kicking up behind me, and stepped out to take a closer look.
The air smelled faintly of dry grass and sunbaked earth, and the only sounds were the faint rustling of the wind through brittle weeds and the occasional call of a far-off bird. I stood there for a moment, captivated by the scene. The emptiness of the surrounding land made the building feel like a relic of another world, a lone testament to the resilience and eventual surrender of those who once carved out a life here.
As I set up my camera, I thought about what this place might have been. The symmetry of the structure and its functional design suggested a farm building, likely bustling with life in its prime.
