When I arrived in Seligman, I knew I had to capture this classic piece of Americana. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, highlighting the worn edges of the neon sign and the building’s well-loved exterior. But getting the right composition proved trickier than expected. Standing directly in front of the motel, I couldn’t quite frame the shot the way I wanted. The perspective felt off, and the light wasn’t hitting the sign the way I had envisioned.



After a few frustrating attempts, I took a step back—literally. I crossed the street and walked a bit down the block, swapping my wide-angle lens for a short telephoto. This new vantage point made all the difference. The telephoto compression brought the sign and building together in a way that felt more balanced, with the soft, golden light wrapping around every weathered detail. The shadows of the leafless trees behind the sign added an extra layer of texture to the shot, giving it a sense of depth and timelessness.



As I clicked the shutter, I knew I had it—the perfect blend of history, light, and composition. The Supai Motel, like so many Route 66 landmarks, isn’t just a building with a sign. It’s a portal to another era, a reminder of when the journey was just as important as the destination. Standing there, I could almost hear the hum of classic cars pulling in for the night, their drivers seeking a hot meal and a good night’s sleep before continuing their westward adventure.



With the shot secured, I took a moment to appreciate the scene before me. The neon wasn’t yet glowing, but the magic of Route 66 was alive and well. I packed up my gear, feeling grateful for the chance to preserve a small piece of this legendary road, knowing that as long as photographers and travelers keep stopping, the spirit of the Mother Road will never truly fade.
