Cleveland had always been a city of surprises for me, and this trip was no exception. I was there for work, just a few blocks away from the renowned Playhouse Square, a cultural gem I’d passed on a previous visit but hadn’t had the chance to photograph. This time, I promised myself I wouldn’t miss it.
Playhouse Square is the heartbeat of Cleveland’s theater district and the second-largest performing arts center in the U.S. after New York City’s Lincoln Center. Built in the 1920s, it originally consisted of five opulent theaters, drawing visitors from far and wide. Over the decades, the theaters fell into disrepair, nearly succumbing to the wrecking ball. Thanks to passionate community efforts in the 1970s, the theaters were saved and restored, blossoming into the iconic district it is today. Its crowning jewel is the dazzling chandelier that hangs high above the street, the largest outdoor chandelier in the world, made of thousands of glittering crystals.
On this night, temperatures had plummeted into the 20s, but the icy wind blowing off Lake Erie made it feel like the teens. I layered up, tucked my camera bag under my coat, and braced myself for the half-mile walk from my hotel. The city streets were quieter than I’d expected, with only a few cars passing and the occasional echo of footsteps bouncing off the tall buildings.
As I approached Playhouse Square, the chandelier came into view, its sparkling crystals illuminated against the night sky. The accompanying Playhouse Square sign, glowing in classic neon, added a touch of timeless elegance. The entire scene was a breathtaking contrast of vintage charm and modern vibrancy.
The cold air bit at my fingers as I set up my tripod. The challenge was to get the perfect angle that captured the chandelier’s grandeur while framing the glowing sign in the background. Every gust of wind made the process just a bit harder—my fingers numbing, my camera shaking slightly despite my best efforts. Each passing car added a new element of light to the scene, but it was worth the patience to wait for the perfect moment.
Finally, I pressed the shutter. The camera’s preview screen showed exactly what I’d envisioned: the intricate details of the chandelier sparkling like a constellation and the Playhouse Square sign standing tall as a beacon of Cleveland’s rich cultural history. The black-and-white treatment I planned for the photo would emphasize the light, shadows, and textures in a way that color couldn’t.
As I packed up my gear, I felt a mix of accomplishment and awe. Playhouse Square wasn’t just a location—it was a story, a testament to a city’s resilience and passion for the arts. Walking back to the hotel, the wind felt just a little less biting, the glow of the moment warming me more than my layers ever could.
