Movie Theater Wall Art
The Paramount Theater in Amarillo, Texas, was a shining beacon of the golden age of cinema. Built in 1932, it was a masterpiece of Art Deco design, its grand marquee and elegant interiors welcoming moviegoers for decades. Like many classic theaters, it struggled to compete with the rise of multiplexes, and in 1975, it closed its doors for good. The facade stayed in place, but the building was converted to office space in 1978, and the iconic vertical Paramount sign was removed and found a second life at a popular nightclub called The Paramount Club. For years, it stood there, a reminder of a bygone era, until 2006, when efforts to restore some of the theater's historic charm saw the sign returned to its rightful place.
I was in downtown Amarillo for a night photography session, and the Paramount sign was high on my list. Neon photography presents a unique challenge—especially with a sign like this one, which features twinkling bulbs that light up in a rhythmic sequence. A single long exposure would overexpose the bright neon and white letters, washing out the details, but a short exposure would fail to capture all the bulbs in their fully lit state. I had to take multiple exposures at different settings, carefully blending them later to recreate what the eye sees but the camera struggles to capture.
I set up my tripod across the street, waiting for just the right moment. Amarillo’s downtown was quiet, the streets mostly empty aside from the occasional car passing by. The glow of the red neon bathed the Art Deco facade in a dramatic light, adding to the vintage feel of the scene. I fired off my series of exposures, checking each one to make sure I had every element I needed.
After some careful post-processing, I finally had the image I had envisioned—a perfect tribute to a sign that has seen decades of history, lost and found, much like the theater itself. The Paramount’s story is one of resilience, and capturing its glow against the night sky felt like preserving a piece of Amarillo’s past for the future.
