The alarm buzzed at 1:30 AM. Most people would groan and roll over—but not this crew. I was in Monument Valley with a group of photographer friends on a trip that had already taken us through the red rocks of Sedona and the canyon walls of the Grand Canyon. This morning, though, was about something else entirely: light, silence, and the surreal beauty of Monument Valley at dawn.



We started with astrophotography, capturing the Milky Way arching over the desert in the dead of night. After hours of shooting under a moonlit sky, we packed up and headed for the visitor center just as the first hint of twilight began to brush the horizon. The wind had picked up, and the spring air had a sharp bite to it—but adrenaline was our insulation.



As the darkness faded, three titans of the desert began to emerge in silhouette: the Left Mitten, the Right Mitten, and Merrick Butte. The Left and Right Mittens, named for their distinctive mitten-like shapes with “thumbs” that face inward, are the most recognizable icons of Monument Valley. Merrick Butte, to the far right, is named after prospector Jack Merrick, who met a tragic end here in the 1880s during the region’s turbulent frontier days. Together, these three formations form one of the most photographed vistas in the American Southwest—and for good reason.



As the sun breached the distant horizon, it lit up the landscape like a firestorm. The Mittens turned a deep crimson, shadows stretched long across the valley floor, and the Navajo earth glowed with that otherworldly palette of purples, oranges, and reds that no filter could ever replicate. We stood there in quiet awe, the wind cutting through our jackets, our cameras clicking in unison like a ritual.



The moment was fleeting—but the photo remains. This shot captures the stillness after a long night, the reward after the journey, and the timeless power of a place where stone giants have stood watch for millions of years.
