In the heart of Monument Valley, our Navajo guide led us off the well-trodden path and into a realm few get to see without local knowledge. We were deep in the backcountry, enveloped in silence and red stone, when he brought us to a place he simply called: Sun’s Eye.
The name alone stirred something ancient in me. As we approached the towering sandstone wall, we looked up—and there it was: a perfect, elliptical opening carved by time and wind, high above in the rock face. The sky framed inside it was electric blue, and just as we arrived, golden sunlight poured through the arch, illuminating the chamber in an amber glow. The timing was nothing short of magical, as if the land itself had been waiting for us.
Sun’s Eye isn’t just another natural arch—it’s one of the lesser-known treasures of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, tucked away in a sacred region only accessible with a Navajo guide. The arch has been shaped over millions of years by the forces of erosion, and its name comes from the way light enters it—like the eye of the sun peering into the canyon. To the Diné, or Navajo people, places like this are more than geology—they are living stories, infused with spirit and memory.
While this particular formation isn’t as widely written about as the Mittens or Totem Pole, it carries immense cultural significance. The Navajo see such places as dwellings of the holy people, or as windows into the spirit world. Many believe that the energy found at Sun’s Eye can bring clarity, focus, and healing. Our guide spoke in hushed tones as we stood there, as if even his voice knew not to disturb the stillness.
I set up my tripod quickly but carefully, my heart racing. The light was changing by the second, streaming through the arch in streaks that danced on the crimson stone. The smell of dry earth and juniper was thick in the air, and the faint wind echoing through the alcove sounded like breath from the canyon itself. I pressed the shutter as the sunlight reached its peak—an explosion of color, shadow, and form captured in a single instant.

We all just stood there after, cameras lowered, hushed by the moment. It felt like we’d been granted an audience with something ancient and divine.
