I was chasing the last light of day along Highway 28, hugging the eastern edge of Lake Tahoe when the sky began to glow. Just south of Sand Harbor State Park, I saw it—the colors, the calm water, the snow-capped mountains catching the soft light—and I knew I had to stop.
Easier said than done.
There’s not much of a shoulder on this winding stretch of highway, and cars were flying past at 50 miles an hour. I pulled as far off the road as I could, grabbed my gear, and scrambled down a slope toward the lake. The scent of pine sap and cold earth filled the air, and the distant roar of passing traffic quickly faded behind the gentle whisper of wind in the trees.
But finding the shot took some work.
The shoreline here is wild and uneven, and I needed just the right view. I moved left. Then right. Clambered over a boulder. Stepped through a thicket. Too many dead branches here. Too many trunks blocking the water there. But then—I found it.
A perfect break in the trees.
I set up the tripod and watched the lake stretch out before me, glassy and violet in the fading light. Across the water, the mountains of the California side stood draped in snow, their peaks catching the last golden tones of the sun. The sky melted from blue to lavender to peach, casting an otherworldly glow over the whole scene.
The only sounds now were the soft lapping of water below and the occasional creak of a tree in the breeze. The air was crisp, with just a hint of leftover warmth from the day, and it carried the cleanest, clearest scent I’ve ever known. Pure pine. Pure Tahoe.
As the shutter clicked, I took a deep breath. This wasn’t just a photo—it was a moment of stillness in the middle of motion. Of beauty caught in the chaos of the highway. Of nature asserting itself just a few steps off the beaten path.
When I finally packed up, the stars were starting to poke through the deepening sky, and the cars still flew by behind me. But I had what I came for.
