The sun was dipping low over Lake Tahoe, casting a golden path across the water and lighting the sky with warm streaks of orange, pink, and fading blue. Then I saw it. A narrow pull-off not far from a bend in the road, mostly missed by passing cars. I grabbed my gear and hurried down a short trail lined with pine needles and granite rocks, the scent of pine and damp earth thick in the air. The cool mountain breeze carried the faint sound of lapping water below, and the occasional rustle of small wildlife in the underbrush.



There it was — the scene I had been chasing all evening. Tall pines stood like silent sentinels, their silhouettes stretching toward the glowing sky.
