Jack Rabbit Trading Post - Route 66 in Arizona
I was cruising along Route 66 between Kingman and the Painted Desert Trading Post, my mind set on capturing the iconic desert outpost at sunset. The light was perfect, casting long shadows across the road and setting the sky ablaze with color. I had a plan, and I didn’t want to lose time. But as I rolled past a low rise, there it was—one of Route 66’s most iconic signs—bright yellow with bold red letters that shouted, “HERE IT IS.”
The Jack Rabbit Trading Post. I knew I had to stop. You can’t pass by a piece of Route 66 history like that and just keep driving.
The Jack Rabbit Trading Post has been luring travelers in since 1949, originally opened by Jim Taylor, who came up with the simple but genius idea to put up signs every few miles counting down the distance, all leading to this final one. The sign itself, with its large silhouette of a jackrabbit and the triumphant proclamation, is one of the most photographed on the Mother Road. Over the decades, the trading post has become legendary, selling everything from souvenirs to snacks to travelers passing through the Arizona desert.
I pulled over and stepped out into the dry, dusty air. The smell of sagebrush filled my nose, and I could hear the slow rattle of a long freight train creeping along the tracks just behind the sign. The wind whipped across the flatland, stirring up little dust devils that danced across the road. The old, cracked pavement stretched ahead, winding into the distance like a promise of adventure.
The iconic sign stood defiant, its sun-faded yellow glowing under the brilliant sky. I walked around, finding just the right angle, positioning the road and the endless line of train cars into the shot. It wasn’t just about the sign itself—it was about capturing the spirit of the place. The vastness of the Arizona landscape. The feeling that you could drive forever and still find something unexpected around the next bend.
As I composed the shot, I couldn’t help but smile at how this old, simple sign had managed to survive when so much of Route 66 had faded into memory. I thought of all the travelers over the decades who had stood right here, cameras in hand, documenting their own journeys just as I was doing now. The wind howled, carrying with it a sense of timelessness, as if the Jack Rabbit itself was watching over the road, daring travelers to keep moving.
I snapped a few shots, adjusting my settings to catch the rich colors of the sign without washing out the bold sky. The train rumbled louder, steel wheels clanking and grinding against the rails, reminding me that even here, at this remote outpost of Americana, life kept moving forward.
Satisfied that I had captured the essence of the place, I climbed back into my car and took one last look at the sign before pulling back onto the highway. The road beckoned me onward, calling me to continue the journey. Painted Desert Trading Post was still waiting, but I knew that years from now, I’d remember this spontaneous stop just as vividly as any grand destination.
Route 66 has a way of surprising you like that. Sometimes, the unexpected stops are the ones that stick with you the longest.
