The Santa Fe Building in downtown Amarillo is a towering remnant of a bygone era, a time when the railroad was king and the Santa Fe Railway shaped the growth of the Texas Panhandle. Completed in 1930, the building was designed in a striking Art Deco style, serving as a regional office for the railway for decades. But what truly sets it apart is the massive neon "Santa Fe" sign crowning its roof. First installed in the 1950s, the sign became an unmistakable beacon in the Amarillo skyline, a glowing tribute to the city’s deep railroad roots. After years of neglect, the sign was restored in 2003, ensuring it would continue lighting up the Texas sky for generations to come.
Capturing this image wasn’t as simple as pointing a camera and pressing the shutter. I had carefully planned my timing to catch the sign glowing against the rich hues of sunset, but I hadn’t accounted for one detail—the lights didn’t turn on when I expected. As I waited, the sky burned orange and deepened into twilight. The colors were fading fast, and I started to wonder if I had miscalculated my chance.
Just as the last remnants of the golden hour began slipping away, the neon flickered to life. The brilliant red glow illuminated the intricate details of the building’s architecture, contrasting perfectly with the dusky sky behind it. I launched my drone, carefully maneuvering to frame the shot just right, mindful of both composition and the ever-changing ambient light. The Texas and American flags rippled in the wind, adding a sense of movement to the stillness of the historic structure.
As I reviewed the images, I knew I had captured something special—a moment where past and present met, where the history of the Santa Fe Railway lived on in electric glow above the Amarillo skyline. It was worth the wait.
