Driving through the vast expanse of far West Texas on US-90, I found myself embraced by the solitude and stark beauty of the desert. The road stretched endlessly, dotted with rugged hills, patches of resilient cacti, and the occasional cluster of weathered buildings marking small towns that seemed to have been frozen in time. One such town was Sanderson.
As I slowed down to pass through this tiny, unassuming town, a relic from the past caught my eye. It stood quietly alongside the road—a long-abandoned gas station, its rusted pumps standing sentinel beneath a battered canopy. The sign atop one of the poles read "Discount Self-Serv Gas," its faded lettering barely clinging to the passing decades. I couldn't resist. I pulled over and parked, the crunch of gravel under my tires breaking the desert silence.
Stepping out into the dry, sun-drenched air, I grabbed my camera and approached the station. It was a quintessential slice of Texas history, a reminder of a time when road trips meant stopping for gas at places like this, chatting with locals, and grabbing a cold soda from the cooler inside. The pumps, though rusted and long inoperative, still exuded charm. They seemed like forgotten storytellers, each one with tales of travelers who had once stopped here on their way to destinations unknown.
What truly brought a smile to my face, though, was the name painted across the white cinderblock building: "Bucky's." I laughed out loud, half-expecting the famous beaver mascot of Buc-ee’s—Texas' larger-than-life convenience store chain—to make an appearance. The comparison was hilarious. Buc-ee’s, with its sprawling parking lots and famously clean restrooms, was a Texas legend. And here stood Bucky's, a lone and humble tribute to simpler times, its name likely painted with an unassuming pride.
The scene was bathed in the golden light of late afternoon. Shadows stretched long across the cracked concrete, and the warmth of the setting sun brought out the details of the peeling paint and rusted metal.
