My 10-year-old son and I were on a weekend photography adventure, exploring the backroads of Texas, searching for hidden gems that time had left behind. We had no rigid itinerary—just a list of a few must-see spots, a camera in hand, and a spirit of adventure.
As we rolled into Iredell, Texas, a small town nestled in Bosque County, we were struck by its quiet charm. Founded in the 1850s, Iredell had once been a bustling community along trade routes, benefiting from cattle drives and later the arrival of the railroad. Though time had moved forward, parts of Iredell had remained frozen, leaving behind relics of its past—one of which stood before us now.
This abandoned gas station was a sight to behold. The rusting gas pump, leaning awning, and weather-beaten structures told a story of decades gone by. Who once stopped here? What road-worn travelers refueled their cars and shared stories under this very roof?
We had no choice but to pull over.
My son grabbed his camera, eager to capture the eerie beauty of the scene. I stood back for a moment, soaking it all in—the faded paint, the crumbling structures, the overgrown grass reclaiming what was once pavement. This place had seen better days, yet somehow, it still had a presence.
Setting up my shot, I framed the tilted canopy in contrast with the overcast sky, the textures of rust and decay popping against the muted light of the afternoon. The moment felt like stepping back in time, into an era when road trips were measured not in miles, but in stops like these.
As we packed up and continued down the road, I looked over at my son, grinning as he scrolled through his camera. "That was a cool one," he said.
It was more than just a cool shot—it was a memory, a glimpse into the past, and a piece of Texas history frozen in time.
