The western Texas Panhandle is a place of quiet resilience, where remnants of the past blend seamlessly with the enduring present. I had spent the day tracing old Route 66, weaving through forgotten towns and photographing weathered signs and abandoned buildings. The low, golden sun began to dip toward the horizon as I made my way westward, and that’s when I stumbled upon this scene—a working windmill standing tall against the expansive plains, surrounded by a gathering of cattle.
It’s rare these days to find a windmill in operation. Many of the ones I’d seen along my journey were little more than nostalgic relics, spinning idly in the breeze or frozen in place, their purpose long since retired. But this windmill was alive, its blades turning rhythmically as it pumped water into a trough for the cattle. The sound of the creaking metal echoed faintly in the stillness, blending with the occasional lowing of the cows and the whisper of the wind through dry grasses.
The scene felt timeless, a snapshot of life on the plains that could have just as easily existed a century ago. The setting sun bathed the landscape in warm hues, casting long shadows across the golden fields.
