There’s something about the vast openness of the Mojave Desert that makes you feel small. The isolation, the endless sky, and the long, straight road stretching to the horizon—it all feels like stepping into another time. That’s exactly how I felt when I arrived in Amboy, California, a near-ghost town on historic Route 66.



Amboy was once a bustling stop along the Mother Road, a crucial waypoint for travelers making the trek between Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon. In its heyday, Roy’s Motel and Cafe was a beacon for weary drivers looking for fuel, food, and a place to rest. But with the opening of Interstate 40, Amboy—like so many other Route 66 towns—faded into near-obscurity. Today, it stands as a living relic of the past, its iconic Roy’s sign still standing defiantly against the desert wind.



That wind was my biggest obstacle the day I arrived.



I had envisioned this shot before I even got to Amboy—a drone’s-eye view of Route 66 disappearing into infinity, flanked by the barren desert and distant mountains. But when I stepped out of my truck, the wind nearly took my hat off. The gusts were relentless, shaking the scrub brush and sending plumes of dust swirling across the pavement. Launching a drone in those conditions wasn’t just risky; it was downright impossible.



So I waited.



I stood at the side of the road, watching the wind rip across the landscape, hoping for a break. Minutes passed, then an hour. I considered giving up, but something told me to wait just a little longer. And then, for just a few moments, the wind eased.



I didn’t hesitate.



I launched the drone and sent it high above the road. From that vantage point, Route 66 looked like an arrow shot straight through time, leading into an endless horizon. The desert sprawled out around it, dotted with lonely shrubs and ghostly tire tracks from travelers long past. The clouds hung heavy, casting dynamic shadows that gave the scene an almost surreal texture.



I took the shot.



As soon as I landed the drone, the wind roared back with a vengeance, as if the desert itself had merely granted me a brief window to capture its beauty before reclaiming its fierce domain.



Looking at the image later, I knew I had something special—a moment of stillness in a place that has seen generations pass through, all chasing something just beyond the horizon. It was Route 66 in its purest form: an open road, a sense of adventure, and the untamed spirit of the American West.
