In April 2024, my then 10-year-old son and I embarked on a three-day photography adventure across Texas. It was a journey fueled by curiosity and a love for exploration. We had a few planned stops—like the Outlaw Gas Station in Glen Rose and the old church in Hyman—but most of our route was a blank slate. Back roads would be our guide, leading us to whatever treasures Texas had hidden away.
The air was crisp with the promise of spring, and the back roads delivered endless surprises: rolling hills, abandoned barns, and fields painted with wildflowers. As we drove westward, the small town of Burkett appeared almost out of nowhere. The tiny community seemed frozen in time, with no signs of life except for the rustle of leaves in the warm breeze.
It was here that we stumbled upon a gem—a weathered old store, its tin exterior shimmering faintly under the midday sun. The sign above read "Goodrich Silvertowns," a nostalgic nod to a bygone era. The building stood stoically, flanked by overgrown trees that framed it like nature’s own portrait. My son, always eager to spot the next subject, was the first to point it out. “Dad, look! That’s the coolest building yet!”
We parked on the roadside, stepping out into the silence of Burkett. The only sounds were the distant chirps of birds. The store, though clearly abandoned, seemed alive with stories. I imagined farmers stopping by for supplies in the 1940s, chatting on the porch while their trucks idled in the dirt lot. Now, the porch was home to a weathered chair, a stack of tires, and an old drill press.
The light was perfect—soft and golden, casting gentle shadows that accentuated every line and crease of the building’s aged tin.
As I framed my shot, I took a moment to appreciate the serenity of the moment. There was something magical about being in a place so untouched, so removed from the chaos of modern life. The stillness allowed us to connect—not just with the scene before us, but with each other. My son snapped away, grinning as he showed me his latest capture. His excitement was contagious.
Our journey continued, with more back roads and unexpected discoveries, but Burkett stood out as a favorite stop. That old store wasn’t just a photograph; it was a memory—a moment of shared wonder between a father and son, and a testament to the beauty waiting to be found in the most unassuming corners of Texas.
