Cadillac Ranch - Route 66 in Amarillo
Amarillo is my hometown, and every time I come back to visit family, I’m hit with that familiar mix of nostalgia and pride. On this trip, after catching up with everyone, my dad and I decided to sneak away for a little while and visit Cadillac Ranch. It’s one of those places that feels like it’s always been there, like a permanent fixture of the Panhandle landscape, even though I know it hasn’t.
Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by a group of San Francisco artists known as The Ant Farm, funded by eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh 3. The idea was simple and bizarre—a line of ten Cadillacs, ranging from 1949 to 1963 models, half-buried nose-first into the dusty Texas soil. Originally located along Route 66, the installation was moved a couple of miles west in 1997 to accommodate the growing city. Over the decades, visitors have transformed the cars into living canvases, covering them in layer after layer of graffiti. It’s never the same twice—every visit brings new colors, new words, new art.
We pulled up, and the wind hit me like a freight train—no surprise for Amarillo. The sky was that perfect shade of blue, dotted with big, fluffy clouds drifting lazily along. We walked across the crunchy, hard-packed dirt toward the cars, and the smell of spray paint lingered in the air, blending with the dry scent of West Texas dust. The sounds of paint cans rattling and laughter from other visitors echoed across the open field. There’s a constant murmur at Cadillac Ranch, a blend of voices, the metallic clink of spray can nozzles, and the wind whistling through the exposed metal.
The cars themselves were vibrant and chaotic—every inch of metal coated with fresh paint, old paint, and chipped remnants of both. You could practically feel the stories embedded in those layers. I looked for just the right angle, wanting to capture the perfect line of cars receding into the horizon. The way the sunlight hit the metal made the colors pop even more, giving the scene an almost surreal glow. The shadows stretched long and sharp on the ground, like arrows pointing toward the future.
Dad stood back, watching me work. He knew how much I loved capturing places like this—places that tell a story, even if the story is constantly changing. I could hear someone nearby laughing as they tagged a car with a bright pink heart, and I couldn’t help but grin. Cadillac Ranch is about creativity, rebellion, and leaving your mark on something bigger than yourself.
When I finally found the shot, I steadied the camera, adjusting for the bright sunlight and deep shadows. The cars lined up just right, their psychedelic colors clashing against the pure Texas sky. I clicked the shutter a few times, making sure to catch the angle where the cars seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance. I knew I had it—the shot that captured not just the art but the spirit of Cadillac Ranch itself.
Dad wandered over, squinting into the sun. “Get what you needed?” he asked with a knowing smile.
I nodded, still feeling the energy of the place. “Yeah. I think I did.”
We headed back to the car, both of us a little dusty and a little windblown, but it didn’t matter. It was one of those perfect days where the nostalgia and the present collide, reminding me that no matter how far I travel, Amarillo will always be home.
