The grand adventure was winding down. After days immersed in the red rock majesty of Sedona, the towering monoliths of Monument Valley, and the dizzying depths of the Grand Canyon, I found myself back in Phoenix, with a few hours to kill before my flight home. While most people might opt for an air-conditioned cafe or a quiet airport lounge, I looked at the 109-degree forecast, shrugged, and headed for South Mountain.
South Mountain Park—one of the largest municipal parks in the United States—is a rugged preserve of volcanic rock, desert flora, and panoramic views of the Valley of the Sun. Originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park remains a symbol of Phoenix’s commitment to preserving its desert soul amid relentless urban sprawl.
As I wandered the scorched trail, camera in hand and sweat dripping into my eyes, I spotted it: a glowing sentinel of the Sonoran Desert—the Teddy Bear Cholla. Deceptively cuddly in appearance, this cactus is anything but soft. Each segment is covered in silvery spines with microscopic barbs that latch on with a vengeance. Desert lore calls them “jumping cholla” because the segmented joints detach at the slightest brush, leaving hikers with some clingy souvenirs.
But in the golden, unrelenting light of that Phoenix afternoon, this cholla looked like it was lit from within—its spines catching the sun like fiber-optic filaments. Its twisted trunk and haloed arms stood defiant against the craggy hillside, like a warrior with a crown of thorns.
I crouched, framed the shot, and waited for a gust of hot wind to sweep through. There were no clouds to shield me—just the shimmer of heatwaves rising off the rocks and the distant buzz of cicadas. The desert didn’t whisper. It blared.
And then—click.
In that blistering moment, with a plane to catch and my clothes soaked in sweat, I realized the trip hadn’t ended. This was the final chapter. A farewell from the desert itself. A reminder that beauty doesn't wait for comfort, and stories worth telling don’t always unfold in cool, convenient places.
