It had been a long day of travel and meetings in Cleveland, Ohio. After finally checking into the hotel downtown, I stepped into my room, set my bags down, and instinctively went to open the curtains. What greeted me outside was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Illuminated in vibrant green lights against the deep black of the night sky was the majestic Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Its gothic architecture stood out like a beacon amidst the modern cityscape, and I knew immediately I had to capture this scene.
I grabbed my camera from my bag, adjusting the settings for the low light. The room was quiet, save for the hum of the heating system combating the frigid temperatures outside. I turned off all the lights in the room to reduce reflections on the glass, and carefully positioned myself against the windowpane.
From this vantage point, I could see the stained-glass windows glowing softly, even though the cathedral was closed for the night. The tall spire, outlined in emerald light, seemed to reach endlessly into the night sky. The streets below were nearly empty, with just the occasional car passing by, its headlights casting fleeting reflections on the surrounding buildings.
The atmosphere was serene, punctuated only by the faint sounds of the city—a distant horn, or the hum of an engine. Even through the sealed window, I could almost imagine the cold, crisp air outside and the faint smell of damp concrete after the day’s light rain.
The cathedral's stone facade, bathed in shadows and light, created a contrast so dramatic that it almost felt alive. As I framed the shot, the grandeur of the scene became overwhelming. The artistry of the structure, paired with the stillness of the moment, made it feel as though time had paused.
I took several shots, adjusting the exposure to ensure every detail—from the intricate carvings above the entrance to the spire's illuminated cross—was captured. The experience was more than just taking a photo; it was a moment of connection, of reverence for human craftsmanship, the quiet beauty of the world after dark, and His church.
As I reviewed the photos on my camera, a sense of satisfaction washed over me. This wasn’t just another image—it was a memory, a piece of Cleveland that I could carry with me. The warmth of the room enveloped me as I stepped away from the window, but the magic of that view stayed with me long after I packed up and returned to my routine. This photograph, taken in the stillness of a hotel room, became one of my favorite stories to tell.
