When my family was new, we would go on a mission trip every year to Ruidoso, then swing through Amarillo to visit loved ones on our way home. Each time, we decided to stop by an old favorite along the way: the Route 66 Restaurant in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. My wife and I had been there before with our two young kids—our son, 5, and daughter, 2—and it had become a cherished pit stop. There was something timeless about this place, a small-town diner with that nostalgic Route 66 spirit.
We settled into our usual order: pancakes for the kids, a fresh salad for my wife, and a plate of New Mexico’s best enchiladas for me. The smell of sizzling onions and red chile filled the air, mingling with the scent of coffee and syrup. Everything felt familiar—the checkerboard floor, the hum of a radio, because the old jukebox in the corner no longer played, and this iconic diner seat emblazoned with the “66” in retro black leather. It was sturdy but worn, a bit battered by time and countless travelers who had taken a seat on their journey along the Mother Road.
As we waited for our food, I pulled out my camera to capture a few photos of the place. The lights overhead glowed brightly, casting a cheery light across the chrome accents and faded walls. The soft murmur of other diners blended with the clatter of dishes in the kitchen. It was the kind of place that made you feel connected to the past, to all the memories and stories held within its walls.
I’m glad I took those photos because the following year, the world turned upside down. COVID-19 shut down businesses across the country, and like many beloved places, this diner was one of its casualties. It never reopened, a piece of Route 66 history lost to the pandemic.
Now, whenever I look at that photo of the “66” seat, I’m transported back to that moment with my family, sharing a meal in a place that felt like a slice of Americana. It's a bittersweet memory of simpler times and a reminder of the fragile beauty of these roadside relics.
