My heart raced as I stood in the vast desert expanse just east of Amboy, California, determined to capture Route 66 like no one ever had - from the air. The old road stretched endlessly beneath the scorching sun, a ribbon of history winding through the barren landscape. The wind, however, had other plans. Gusts swept through the desert, tossing grains of sand that stung my face. Each step forward felt like pushing against an invisible wall.
I tasted the dryness of the air, tinged with dust, while the smell of hot asphalt mixed with desert sage lingered in my nose. The wind whistled around me, loud and relentless, making it almost impossible to focus. I glanced at my drone in its case, ready to launch, but doubted whether it would even take off. Every second I waited, my dream of capturing this unique view of Route 66 seemed to slip further away.
The silence was haunting - no cars, no people, just the vast sky and the constant sound of wind in my ears. The neon sign of Roy’s Motel and Cafe creaked in the distance, standing as a lonely relic of Americana. I felt a surge of determination. I hadn’t come all this way to fail. I would make this happen.
I launched the drone. For a moment, it fought the wind, struggling to gain height. My heart pounded, and my palms grew sweaty as I adjusted the controls. The wind picked up, harder than before. Just when I thought the drone would crash into the desert sands, I found a brief window of calm. I took my shot.
The sky, the road, the endless desert - everything came together in one perfect frame. I couldn’t believe it. I had done it.
As the drone landed, the wind howled once more, as if angry it hadn’t ruined my dream. I smiled, feeling the rush of adrenaline. I had photographed Route 66 from the air, capturing a piece of American history forever.
