I had my Jeep crawling up the rugged terrain of Engineer Pass, one of Colorado’s most notorious high-altitude routes. Built in the late 1800s during the mining boom, this pass is a remnant of history, connecting Ouray and Lake City through an unforgiving, rocky path that miners once used to haul ore. The pass peaks at over 12,800 feet, offering some of the most breathtaking views in the state. As I neared the summit, clouds loomed overhead, heavy with the threat of rain, but there was no turning back now.

The trail was rough and narrow, the Jeep bouncing over jagged rocks, the engine straining with each incline. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and wet earth. Patches of snow clung to the mountainsides, even in the summer. The sound of the wind howled through the peaks, and every gust seemed to whisper the stories of those who had braved this pass long before me. My hands gripped the wheel tightly as I navigated the final stretch.

When I finally reached the summit, the sight before me was staggering. The red-orange ridges of Engineer Mountain stretched out under a moody sky, the sun breaking through just enough to illuminate the rocky slopes in a surreal glow. The valley below was a patchwork of green meadows, dotted with alpine wildflowers, contrasting with the jagged peaks beyond.

I scrambled to set up my camera, the wind tugging at my clothes. I could feel the first drops of rain starting to fall, but I wasn’t leaving without my shot. The sky darkened, and the distant rumble of thunder echoed through the mountains. With every click of the shutter, I captured the raw beauty of the moment—the mix of vibrant colors, the heavy clouds, and the silence of the mountains broken only by the wind.

As the rain began to fall in earnest, I packed up quickly and jumped back into the Jeep. I had the shot. Looking back at the pass, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. I had faced the odds, and Engineer Pass had given me its treasure.
