I wasn’t planning to stop—just passing through a rough part of town when that neon caught my eye. An old motel, half-forgotten, the red glow from its sign bleeding into the night like a heartbeat. Something about it grabbed me. I knew I had to capture it.
But the neighborhood wasn’t exactly welcoming. The parking lot was full of potholes, and flickering streetlights cast shadows that hinted at trouble. Music blared from distant cars, muffled by the humid night air, while voices echoed in the distance—sharp and slurred, arguing or laughing, I couldn’t tell which. The scent of cigarettes, and asphalt baked by the day’s heat lingered, thick in my nose.
I parked my truck under a busted light in the parking lot, debating. My camera gear wasn’t cheap, and I felt the weight of it like a target on my back. A lot could go wrong here. But the neon—the way it reflected off the motel’s brick walls and bounced off the windows of the parked cars—it was too perfect.
I grabbed my camera and stepped into the night. The red neon bathed everything in a surreal glow. The buzz from the sign hummed over the distant sounds of sirens, and I could feel the grit of the pavement under my boots. I framed the shot, adjusting the exposure to capture the glow just right, hands steady despite the tension in my chest.
Then I heard the office door open. A large man emerged from the shadows, his clothes loose and his gaze sharp. “Why are you takin’ pictures here?” he asked, voice low.
“Just a photographer,” I answered, forcing a grin. “Neon like this—you don’t see it every day.”
He stared at me for a moment that seemed too long, then shrugged and went back inside. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.
I snapped several shots hand holding my camera - maybe ten of them - until I knew I had it. I dared not set up a tripod in this place, in case I needed to get going fast.
Later, when I looked at the photos—the deep reds glowing against the shadows—I knew it was worth it. I’d captured more than a motel; I’d frozen a moment in time, at a place with 1 star rooms and 5 star neon.
